Have a clunker in the driveway? It could be worth up to $4,500 when you buy or lease a new car, thanks to the just signed Car Allowance Rebate System, or C.A.R.S., or as most people are calling it “Cash for Clunkers” bill.
This is a truly historic opportunity for consumers and dealers. The intent of the law is to remove fuel inefficient vehicles from America’s roadways.
Simply put, you can receive up to $4,500 for your old gas-guzzler if your vehicle meets certain criteria.
A few quick facts:
- The purchased vehicle must be new and cost no more than $45,000.
- The program officially begins July 1st, guidelines will be in place July 24th.
- The vehicle you trade must not be older than 1984.
- Vehicle must be drivable.
- Vehicle must be registered to the same owner for at least one year.
- Vehicle must be insured according to state law for at least one year.
- You may qualify for $3,500 voucher or $4,500 voucher – depending on the following:
What does this mean to you? Examples:
- If you currently own a 16 year old vehicle that gets 14 mpg and it is worth $500, it is now worth up to $4500!
- If you select a vehicle with a $19,990 MSRP, your purchase price with an eligible clunker would be $15,490. If that same vehicle has a $2,000 manufacturer rebate, your purchase price would be $13,490. Essentially, you can purchase a $20,000 vehicle for $13,500.

How do I take advantage of the program?
- Call or visit one of our dealerships and ask for a salesperson. We can help determine program eligibility by reviewing your vehicle and matching it with the program rules on the official website.
- While in the store, we can review which new vehicles are eligible for the program. You can test drive, compare options, review financing and make your decision.
- Upon selecting a new vehicle, you may reserve your vehicle with a deposit! Program officially begins July 1st, but official guidelines will not be released until July 24th.
